There have been times where, in hopes to build impact online, I have rewritten my content and copy over and over, trying to get it just right. I have polished every word so my message would fit a mold of what makes writing online successful. The polished version hit the marks of what was “right” but would often fall flat. All because through the polishing process, the words lost their Jackieness. I inevitably polished myself off the page. I edited away the humanness that creates impact in the first place.
The truth is, true impact and connection happens when we ditch the formulas, show up more fully as ourselves, and bring our humanness to the page.
At least I know this is true for me.
When I think about those I admire, and how they build impact online, they are the ones who share story, who are not afraid to talk about when life is hard, messy, and uncomfortable. These are the people who teach, or shift my thinking, but do so in a way that feels human and vulnerable. Whatever it is they are writing about, you get a sense that they’ve been there too. They understand. You can feel their personality and heart through the page on the screen.
Ultimately, I want to spend time with their content because I want to spend time with them. And not in a creepy kinda way, but in a way of talking shop over tea kinda way 🙂
Additionally, I feel cultivating humanness in our work is more important than ever in a time where perceived separateness is running rampant as part of the cultural and political dialogs.
Showing up in our imperfections, and in our vulnerability, is its own act of rebellion.
Interestingly, in the copywriting and blogging worlds, there’s a lot of talk about how to build impact online by writing conversationally and infusing more personality into our words.
This trend reinforces our desire for connection.
For me, this is exciting. There’s a pull in the zeitgeist for us to connect on deeper levels. And as a Pisces with a lot of Scorpio energy in my chart, this makes me very excited 🙂
When I think about how I want to show up online, how I want to work with clients, and how I want to be in my writing, it’s about getting down to the universal stories that connect us, leaving perfectionism at the door, and creating space for us all to show up in our humanness.
Of course, when writing for our businesses, we have to be strategic about what makes sense in that context. We don’t need to be airing dirty laundry or even go into detail at times, rather we can use our experiences to help teach, connect, and let people know, yeah, I get it. I’ve been there, too.
Impact comes from the leading with the heart. Connection builds through sharing common struggles, messes, and wins.
So I encourage you:
- Publish before you’re ready.
- Name when something is challenging, or messy. (It’s amazing the pressure and confidence that’s released when you do).
- Write about the stories and experiences that have healed or transformed you. The ones that brought you to sit in front of the screen and build your thing.
- Give yourself permission to create perfectly imperfectly.
The beautiful thing about the Internet is it allows us to connect with amazing people from all over the world. It’s leveled the playing field in regards to starting a business and has given people space to build impact online in meaningful ways.
This begs the question. What legacy do you want to leave?
We all will naturally find our own way. Find the voice, the amount of sharing, the comfort levels that make sense for where we’re at, our work, and our audience. Trust this sacred part of yourself that nudges and protects you. And, I encourage you, to take some risks, share what’s on your heart, and bring your people into your process.
Overall, bringing yourself forward on the page can feel scary. However, it’s the piece that connects us. Of course, there’s a balance to how to do this when writing for our businesses, we always have to be thinking of our reader and what’s in it for them, but when we lead with our heart, and from a foundation, of I see you and I sooo get it because I’ve been there too, that’s when true leadership and impact organically grows.
Now I’d love to hear from you. Have you struggled with bringing yourself into your work (I sure have!) or what’s been your experience reading content that you can feel the person more present in? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
